For the Spanish it is a return to their scene of their greatest triumph their first World Cup victory in 2010 when they defeated the 10-men of Netherlands in the final.
“It is the new SAFA executive’s mission to make Bafana Bafana world-beaters again and we have lined up top-class sides to play our senior national team. We could not have asked for a better start of this campaign than with the game against the reigning FIFA World Cup champions,” newly-elected SAFA president Danny Jordaan said.
South Africa and Spain have met on three previous occasions, all won by the European side.
They beat Bafana Bafana 3-2 at the 2002 World Cup in South Korea & Japan, and by the same scoreline in the third-place play-off at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa. Spain also won a group stage game between the sides 2-0 in that same tournament.
