England manager Roy
Hodgson feels African countries have an edge over their European rivals at next
year's World Cup in Brazil. An African team has never progressed beyond the
quarter-final stage of the event, with Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana getting the
furthest in 1990, 2002 and 2010 respectively. But Hodgson believes that the climate in Brazil will help the teams.
"I think they may have a stronger chance than any of the European teams because of the climate," wrote Hodgson in the programme notes for Monday night's friendly between Nigeria and Italy at Craven Cottage. "There are many African players out there of excellent quality now," Hodgson added. "They play in the top European leagues and that makes the African nations very strong."
England have already booked their place at the competition, while the African qualifying play-offs will concluded this weekend with five spots up for grabs.
